We live in a rural community and I drive about 15 miles through farm land (and new housing developments) to get to work and to church.  This morning’s drive was a little foggie, a light mist permeated the area, but it didn’t really hinder visibility.  The mist, and the light rains of the last few days, has greened everything up.  The grass is growing like crazy and little wildflowers dot the country side; it is just lovely!

I pass a couple of farms where they have horses out in the yard and I noticed something today that I’ve never thought about much; but, today it struck me and I need to share it.  That’s what blogs are all about right???

The horses were eating the new grass, and the pretty yellow flowers, that has sprung up in their enclosures. That really fascinated me and I was taken with the idea that animals are so very smart.  They really appreciate God’s blessings and they intentionally skipped the good for the best.  The horses had hay in their feeding troughs but they were more interested in eating the beautiful, green, live food that God gave them instead of the dry, dead, hay their human masters had provided.

Now, to be sure hay and grains are wonderful sources of nutrition and I’m not criticizing the food that was put before these animals; but I found it fascinating – and extremely intuitive – that the horses preferred the lovely green grass, and the pretty yellow flowers, to the dry brown hay that was available in the feeding trough.  I wish I was as smart as these horses about the food choices I make.  Too often I pass up the good, green, living foods that God has given us for food and eat the over-processed, genetically modified, man-altered foods that are stripped of their nutritional value and don’t do anything for my health or my energy levels.

Genesis 1:29-30 (KJV) – And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.  And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

My husband, Ray, and I have set some goals for this year to eat better – more healthfully – and I think that will include a lot more plant based foods, such as fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables.  We are not ready to give up animal based foods – as some of our friends have done – but we are ready to add more healthy foods to our diets.  And since a greater variety of foods will carry a greater variety of nutritional elements, perhaps we can improve our health in the process.

We took a good step on this adventure yesterday.  We signed up for a nutrition class with a registered dietitian.  It’s the first time we’ve decided to do something like this together.  It has always been difficult for me to resist junk foods.  If there are cookies in the house I will find them and eat them.  It doesn’t matter that I know I will not feel good physically mentally, or spiritually.  It does not matter that I know they will rob me of my energy levels.  I will still eat them.

It will be good to have Ray in the class with me so he will understand what foods we need to eat, and those foods we need to avoid, and perhaps we can learn not to even bring that stuff into the house.  My goal is to stop trying to find satisfaction in life from food; but, rather, to find satisfaction from the one and only source of true satisfaction, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 13:14 (KJV) – But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Dear Friends...   Would you pray for us as we enter this joint venture of trying to eat better?  Would you hold us accountable by asking us once in a while about how we’re doing on our food choices and whether or not we’ve exercised for the day?  I think it will help both of us if we remember that others are praying for us, encouraging us, and watching our progress.

My Prayer for Today...   Dear Lord, Thank you for giving us examples of proper food choices in the animals around us.  Help us to eat right so we can be healthy and so we can serve the cause of our Lord Jesus Christ.
